De Selby Quarry & Grotto – Mount Seskin

Just where the Topaz Petrol Station is now located was the yard of De Selby Quarry. The stone was quarried high up on Mount Seskin and transported down to the roadside by an elaborate system of cables and buckets. At one time, with the help of a German engineer, beautiful tiles were manufactured there, but the invention of cheaper lino and plastic made it uneconomic.  The quarry was sold by the De Selby sisters in 1955 to Roadstone.

The late Mrs. De Selby (owner) had the Marian Grotto built on the road near an ancient holy well, and on the 15th of August every year a crowd of people assemble for devotions.
